As part of an interior gallery renovation, a hyper-environmentally responsive
'Nesting Box' (restroom & shower) redefines art exhibition.
The Nesting Box is environmentally responsive with material, orientation and form.
Materials are modular (plywood), salvaged (glass tiles) andre-purposed (obscure-glass panes) to
minimize waste.
Orienting the Box’s glazing opposite existing exterior windows allows natural lighting, and the gallery's
parallel walls maximize reflection of this light directly to the Box.
Formally, the Box’s entry wall is defined by modular plywood (12’W, 12’H), and reflected on the interior with a
4’ wide ‘Slot’ above the toilet and shower. This opening provides lighting, natural ventilation and
views to existing bowstring trusses.
The Nesting Box determines exhibition environments at the Entry, Gallery and Interior.
The Entry is defined by the Box’s southern plywood exhibit wall that controls access, frames the
gallery and blends with the wood roof, bowstring trusses and new gallery walls.
The Gallery’s new, parallel plywood (vertically oriented) walls frame the Box on one end and the existing,
storefront windows on the other. Naturally stained to match the bowstring trusses, the plywood is a
neutral background to enhance hanging artwork.
The Box's Interior of gray Venetian plaster and green glass tile (sparklingly bathed in natural light) are
colorful contrasts to the warm tones of the main gallery space.
